I have been working on four little bears this week. As you may remember, I work a full-time job and create little bears in the evenings and weekends. In fact, I work so much on them I need to find a housekeeper! Each bear has no less than three hours of hand sewing time, and another three or so hours of dyeing, jointing, stuffing, and adorning. Nothing but bears get done when I am on a roll! This week I got into the Valentine mood and dyed three bears different shades of pink/red. I also have a white one in the works. They will be done and available by Sunday.

These little ones are part of a new type of bear I am making. They are under 8" tall. They are loosely 5-way jointed. The mohair is plucked and very worn in spots. They are not shaded and simply adorned with a ribbon and button. Their eyes are vintage shoebuttons, and they have worn noses that are stitched with different vintage cotton darning threads. It's been awhile!

I can't believe it has been May since I updated my blog. Well, a lot has happened. I am still making and thankfully selling my bears. I know that times are still a little tight for many of us, so I have reduced my prices and will continue to do so. You still are getting my fabulous little Eat Cake! bears, just know that I appreciate everyone that buys one of my bears.

Now on to other news. In my last post we were heading to Idaho to watch our youngest son play in his college world series. He pitched wonderfully and won his game. It was a fun trip and a nice break for my husband and me. One chapter has closed and another one opened for our son. He was signed as a free agent with the Toronto Blue Jays. He just finished his first season and played in the minors for Gulf Coast League, Appalachain League, and finished up in the Midwest League (Single A). We are so proud of him. He was tired by the time he got home in mid-September, he had thrown around 190 innings this year.

I am having a ROAD TO IDAHO Sale!

Our son's college baseball team is in the NAIA World Series in Idaho. We live in Florida, long way from Idaho! It is his senior year and the end of something great. The best team and coaches you would ever want your child to be involved with. We want to be with him as he closes another baseball chapter in his life and on to the next one. So, I am having a workshop sale. All these bears are bargain basement prices. If you see more than one you like, they can ship together for the same cost, which is free if you buy two!

Here are the bears. Each one is $95. I also have this on my facebook page, getting the most exposure I can because we really want to be there with Tucker as he finishes out his stellar college career. Did I mention he was Pitcher of the Year in his conference and top pitcher in the NAIA nation? Yes, we are proud parents!

I used to paint, but I found my love in making bears. I missed it, so I pick up some new paint, brushes, and canvas and started up again. This is my first sampling. I am planning to make this in a bigger form.

Inspired by vintage prom dresses and named after one of my wonderful Aunts, this first one in the series is called The Sugar.

She is so sweet. Notice how my granddaughter approves of the new bear. Another Birdie approved bear! Valerie is hand-dyed and completely hand-stitched. She is big and weighty and just a lovely Valentine. She has vintage brown teddy bear eyes and a sparse stitched nose from vintage darning cotton. She also has claws made from the same cotton. Her paw pads are made from a vintage white military wool blanket. She wears a pink felted heart around her neck from a ribbon and a vintage pinback that says "Oh figs. Let's make a date." She is a lovely large bear made from a lovely fluffy cream mohair that has been aged to a little vintage perfection. She took me some time to create, even though she is big she is still hand stitched. I stitch all my bears twice and then fray block all seams. She has cute little ears, glass teddy bear eyes, and a rough stitched nose. I found this old cotton darning thread in brown and gun metal colors that I used and it turned out great. She also has stitched claws with the same thread. The thread is delicate and it took several tries because I was treating it a little too rough. There is so much going on with this big girl. She wears a vintage green dress with pink crochet trim that I have been saving just for a large bear. She also wears a pink doll sweater that his seen better days. It has been washed a little too much and is felted and has some holes. She is adorned with her favorite magnifying glass that hangs from a string of green sparkly glass beads. On her sweaer she wears her initial on a glass etched glass lense that is attached to her sweater on a piece of vintage pink ribbon. She also wears a vintage pinback that says "Be my Jazzy Baby." She comes with her own little blue bear that is just as sweet as she is. She is a little weighty, filled with a combination of cotton, wool, and steel shot. All my bears are overdyed, aged and well plucked for that well-loved, long ago look. She is available on ebay with many more photos.

First is a red and white panda with a special Christmas bell on a piece of an old rosary chain. The other two are my new pattern that I'm kind of loving. They have curved arms that are a little fatter at the top. The head is a little wider, legs a little longer, and the tummy a little broader. Of course they still have that Eat Cake! look. Here he is, the first snowman. It isn't cold enough here for real snowmen, but Flake turned out pretty darn good! I love him. He is ~7" tall. He is available for adoption. One will be a snowman. He's about 6" tall with his hat and adorable. The other is a little pixie. They are totally adorable! Round and chubby with little pointy ears. They will be in different colors and the first one will be an emerald green. The green turned out quite lovely, better than I thought. Here it is drying so I can finish one up tonight.

Here's my faded red bear with a holiday makeover. She has a new wool felt hat and coat. The coat has a little mop button and a pink felt bow on the back. Her necklace is two vintage feather tree ornaments, a pink glass one and a plastic bell. And don't forget about her matching pillbox hat! She also comes with a vintage inspired bottle brush tree that is dyed a pretty pale pink and has loads of vintage snow flakes. She is available for $169, travel included.

Also ready for a home are this lovely pink pair. The bear is a 9" Eat Cake! bear and her mohair is spot dyed a pale pink. A very pale spotted look. She has a wool felt collar with a matching pompom. Well, my little faded red bear did not find a home this time. But I'm glad she didn't because I have a great plan for the first holiday bear of the 2010 season! She is going to get a little winter white wool felt jacket and hat and a Santa button to go along with it. Maybe even one of my bottle brush trees. I promised her she would look great in this new outfit and would easily find a new home.

Also have new little guys in the works, I am calling them my Petit Pals. I have a brown bear and a cute spotted pink dog almost ready. Once I saw the spotted pink mohair for the dog I had to make one of my bears with it too. She's turning out sweet.

But alas, the new bears will have to wait a little until I can complete my daughter's Halloween costume. She is going as Katy Perry, cupcake bra and blue hair version. What was I thinking?

I had way too many bonehead difficulties with this guy, but next time it will be easier. Still he turned out quite lovely. The mohair dyed perfectly to pale washed out blue and red, and has been aged. He has vintage brown teddy bear eyes and dyed gold wool paw pads. He is 12" tall and quite a hefty fella. I have been working on a few new patterns. First is a toy bear look. He is Tuscadaro, and he is a 9" hand-dyed pale pink sparse mohair bear. Nothing worked for me this last week, including myself! Printer not working, camera gone with daughter on vacation, and our kitchen redo. Too much! I did manage to get a few bears done and almost an elephant. But for now here is Sophie Pinkerton. Isn't she darling? These two are different shades of pink. The darker faced one is an aging techinque I have been testing. I like the darker shading and have done this on an elephant I'm working on.

The one on the left is 10" and the other is more like 12" but proportionally larger. The smaller one is awaiting some cute white cotton bloomers with ruffles.

The little black bear is so cute. I hardly ever do darker bears because I just can't get the eyes and muzzle to look right. So this time I painted the whites around the eyes. I also colored his muzzle. He is really sweet with his red faded circus collar and little pink paw pads.

The other bear is quite a bright guy. He is a red mohair with a yellow backing. He is also super sweet!

Here is another of my traditional bears, a smaller size. The first picture shows him with my a 16" tradiational panda. He is a lavendar panda. And boy is he just so sweet. I have been having some fun working with some over dyeing. I have a lavendar panda in the works with some red overdyed spot. She is shaping up beautifully. She is smaller (around 11") than my last traditional bear but is she sure cute. Also working on a cute orange traditional guy with overdyed red spots. He was supposed to be corally color, but he is definitely more to the orange side. The panda will be done tomorrow and the little orange guy this weekend.

Okra has been adopted. He will be on his way to France next week. Yay for Okra! These bears are fun and way more time consuming than my regular bears. I think they have quite a soulful look to them. I am working on a corally color smaller one and then a lavendar panda. I have been working on some new aging techiques that include overdying.

I am so excited that my first official traditional bear is done! His name is Okra and he stands at 16" tall (but he's too floppy to really stand). He has been aged to perfection. He has antique glass teddy bear eyes and a stitched aged nose. He is heavy and frlumpy (frumpy and floppy). He is the first in my new line of Gabby bears (named after my granddaughter who kisses all the bears she loves). He is tan and greenish/blue mohair that I have aged and plucked. He will be on ebay with a buy it now of $225.

Sorry, have that Santa Baby song in my head again.

Here is my newest design - a fat panda. I had this drawn up about a month ago and it was just sitting on my table and it was killing me that I didn't know how it would look finished. So I had to put everything else down just to finish this fat little guy. He is made from hand-dyed semi-sparse mohair. He is 11" tall, has a fat body, stick legs and a sweet panda baby look. This one has a big pink ribbon and is holding vintage Christmas trim.

This week I have a great red bear with a vintage doll sweater and hat (removable). He looks so cute all dressed ready to go out. I also have another pair, this one is a larger12" bear with a little 5" bear. These are the largest and smallest bears I make. I thought the little faded black bear would be great with this lovely brown bear with mop and black buttons. He also wears a vintage merit badge on his polka dot coat.

The pink bear is from my original pattern and a sweet pink. The brown bear is my new traditional style bear, she is a larger version of the sweet blue baby bear below. She is on ebay with a starting price of $89 and no reserve. The other bear I am really excited about. It is my new tiny bear that has an embroidered mouth and tongue. Next step, open-mouth bears. He is the perfect size (5 - 6") for my leftover mohair. Not to mention he is just adorable!

Halloween bear. I don't know how many Halloween bears I will make, but I really love this color orange and it's a good excuse to use it! She is one of my original Eat Cake! bears dyed a super orange color. She has glass teddy bear eyes and wool paw pads. She has a crocheted wool witch's hat which I think I will add a ribbon tie to. Black pom-poms, and crocheted lacy looking mittens. She comes with the Halloween paper mache ghost bucket. Her adoption fee is $189 and includes travel.

Mother and baby bears. The color is a very sweet kind of pale blue. The mother bear is one of my original Eat Cake! bears and she wears a very pretty cotton doll dress. On the front of the dress is a vintage MOP and wire Mother pin. She has glass eyes and wool paw pads. She has been distressed for that worn, well-loved look. Her baby is a small (6") bear that is much smaller in scale. He has black glass bead eyes and a brown stitched nose. This is the first one of these in this pattern. I wanted a more traditional look and think he turned out pretty good.
The pair are $210 and includes travel costs.

Here are some of the bears I will have ready this week to go to new homes. The orange and blue bear are made from sparse short mohair. The orange one is obvious ly a Halloween bear ($189). She has dyed black pom-poms and a crocheted witch's hat and mittens. The panda is the old one still available, the white one next to him is a just a new design I was working on and have made changes since I made this one. He is made from creamy felted wool (sewn) and then more wool needle-felted on to give him that fuzzy look. Last but not least is the pair of blue bears. The blue is very pretty and this pair includes a mom and cub ($210). She is wearing a vintage doll dress and a vintage MOP and wire "Mother" pin. The cub is my "normal" traditional bear pattern I have been working on. He has glass bead eyes and a brown stitched nose.

The panda has been adopted.

Working feverishly on new little bears. A blue and an orange Eat Cake! original design bear. Also a blue smaller, more traditional bear. He has a normal sized head! I am pretty sure I've never attempted that in a long time.

Still working on the elephant! Sometimes you just have to put them down and wait til they ask for you to finish them.

Here's the big brown bear I just finished, she is a 12" bear that is so sweet!

She wears a vintage doll dress and wool/cotten crocheted mittens. Her paw pads are a vintage pink velvet. She has wool backed black glass eyes.

I have four new bears coming. First there is a large (12") brown bear with cute little green mittens and a doll dress with a bear on it! There is also a very bright sunshine orange bear, a faded red and white panda, and a blue bear with a white cotton dress. I have also just finished a sweet little brown and white spotted ellie! Keeping my fingers crossed that they will be ready by Friday and I will be having a weekend update. Thank you all for following me and adopting my little guys!

ADOPTED! Thank you to two repeat adopters!

The pink and white panda is only my third time I have enlarged my original Eat Cake! bear pattern to a 12" bear. The other two were custom orders, so this is the first time one has been available for "open adoption." She is lovely, made from hand-dyed pink and white. The mohair for her body and for her head are different type of mohairs. She wears a vintage white cotton doll dress that I altered to fit her. She also wears a vintage silver pin with her initials on it M. G. A. - Mary Gertrude Ashworth. Mary is $200.

The other new bear started out being a simple brown bear. Well, I just kept aging him and adorning him. He is my original Eat Cake! bear and is just over 8" tall. He is made from a sparse mohair that I then aged so he looks like he has been well loved. He has stitched "repair marks" from being so well loved! He wears a very sweet vintage doll blue polka dot shirt that had this cute little holes that someone made that I threaded a vintage ribbon through. His paw pads are a vintage pink crushed velvet. He also wears little mittens that I crocheted out of a pale green cotton thread. His name is Brownie and his adoption fee is $169.

Both bears will be listed on ebay later today.

Two holiday bears. One was a special order that is now an orphan. He is a fantastic red faded bear with a vintage trim and velvet leaves. The faded color is a new koolaid dyeing method I have been working on it makes a great faded color. I also have a piece of pink that I'm making a new bear with.

The other is a sweet little white bear in a child's red slipper. She has a vintage gold feather tree ball around his neck and his slipper is stuffed with vintage Christmas trims. The red bear is a special $145 including shipping and the bear in the slipper is $132 including shipping.

Also a blue panda for $150 including shipping.

New bear to be ready tonight or tomorrow (she needs much better pictures!). She is sitting on my messy work table waiting for me to give her a name! She is a 12" hand-dyed brownish tan bear. So while dreaming up new bear colors I realized that I have not made a black and white panda! So here's the little guy. He is 8" tall and have vintage rhinstone buttons sewn on his front. Going, going, almost gone on ebay.... new 9" panda bear. This panda is made from an old piece of dense brown mohair I've had for some time now. The other color is a hand-dyed pale blue. He has a great shaved muzzle and aged look. I tipped the brown fur for a little depth and it has been aged several times. He wears a vintage soda cap and an aged grey ribbon.
